OAK PARK – Some new faces stepped up, and the defense pitched a second-half shutout to help Waubonsie Valley to a season-opening 24-17 win over Oak Park-River Forest on Friday night.
After an OPRF punt, senior Bryce Logan opened the scoring on the first offensive play of the year, running 51 yards for a touchdown. Logan finished the day with 96 yards on 8 carries.
After two scores from the Huskies, Senior Jack Drow took over in his first-ever start for the Warriors. Drow connected with senior Julian Cain for a 40-yard touchdown.
The Huskies took the 17-14 lead into halftime after a field goal with time expiring.
It was time for the Warrior defense in the second half, shutting out OPRF. Although the Huskies were able to move the ball, they weren’t able to get any points on the board. In the meantime, Drow hit Cain again early in the fourth quarter, this time from 29 yards, for the touchdown.

OPRF drove the length of the field in their final drive of the game. However, the clock expired on a quarterback sack inside the red zone.
The Warriors improved to 1-1 on the year. They will host Libertyville on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Dick Kerner Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WVTV and YouTube.
