ELMHURST – The Waubonsie Valley girls indoor track and field team continued their opening week of the 2020 campaign with success at the York Girls Invite on Friday night lead by senior Ashley Heidenrich and junior Itzel Garcia.
Garcia edged out teammate senior Micah Horne by .05 seconds in the 55-meter dash. Garcia finished in :07.63, and Horned ended with a :07.68.
In the 200-meters, it was Garcia again, winning with a :27.32, and teammate senior Alea Mitchell finished second with a :28.36.
Heidenrich paced the distance categories in both the 1600-meters and 3200-meters, finishing first in both. She won the 1600-meters in 5:15.70, while placing first in the 3200-meters in 10:57.06.
“I was thinking I’d be somewhere around eleven minutes,” Heidenrich told Mike Newman of ILCXCTF and Runnerspace.com, “but I wasn’t quite sure, so I was really pumped. I think it helped boost my confidence and show me that I can run with some of the best girls in the state.”
Senior Sarah Khasawneh finished third in the 55m hurdles with a :10.18.
Waubonsie struck once more in the 4×200 relay, finishing in first with a 1:53.61, the team consisting of Garcia, Mitchell, Horne and Faith Skeete.
In the field events, Reagan Westbrook finished 4th in the shot put with 9.36m.
The team continues competition on Thursday at Wheaton-Warrenville South.
