Lam, Diaz Lead Warriors to 10th Place at IHSA State

PALATINE – Waubonsie Valley boys tennis finished tenth as a team at the IHSA State Finals this weekend. It was their best finish in school history and their third appearance in the Top 20. The Warriors finished 11th in both 2013 and 2018.

Senior Aiden Lam defeated Naperville Central’s Rohan Jha, 6-0, 6-3. Lam advanced to the 2nd round of the championship bracket where he defeated Edwardsville’s Colton Hulme, 6-0, 6-3. In the third round, Lam defeated Evanston’s Finn Pollard, 6-3, 6-2.

Lam dropped his match in the championship quarterfinals to Fremd’s Andrew Spurck, 6-4, 6-2. He then lost to Von Steuben’s Garvin Murry, 6-0, 6-1, in the consolation quarterfinals. Lam finished the tournament 3-2 overall.

Freshman Hector Diaz defeated Naperville North’s Aarush Bhardwaj, 6-0, 6-2. Diaz advanced to the 2nd round of the championship bracket against Lake Forest’s Kareem Alsikafi, where he lost, 6-0, 6-2. Diaz then won two straight matches in the consolation bracket. He defeated Stevenson’s Caden Zhao in the fourth round, 1-6, 7-6, 12-10. Diaz then fell in the fourth round of the consolation bracket to New Trier’s Will Feeley, 6-4, 6-0. Diaz went 3-2 overall in the tournament.

Senior Zexin Jiang and freshman Revanth Kothapalli dropped their first match to Maine South’s Jack Hartung and Giona Maccaferri, 6-3, 7-6. They won their first consolation match, 6-0, 6-0, and their second match, 6-3, 7-5, before losing in the third round, 6-4, 6-4.
