ROCKFORD – Waubonsie Valley girls bowling had been hot going into IHSA Finals, having won both the regional and sectional titles. On Friday and Saturday, the Warriors rode that momentum to a third-place finish in the IHSA Finals at Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

Senior Serenity Quintero finished 16th individually and senior Mirica Yancey finished 20th.

After 30 games on Friday, the Warriors were in fourth, just three pins behind third-place O’Fallon. Yancey had led the team on the first day with 1,372 pins, while rolling a team-high 258 in one game.

The following 30 games on Saturday, Waubonsie Valley bounced back and forth between third and fourth before finally putting O’Fallon away. Eventual champion Harlem and second-place finisher Lockport were too out of reach, having over a 650-pin lead.

Quintero finished with 2,501, Yancey with 2,484, senior Angelica Hernandez with 2,230, sophomore Katelyn Orisek with 2,210 and sophomore Natalie Cura with 2,194.

It’s the fifth time in program history that the Warriors have finished in the Top 3. The team finished third in 2008, 2012 and 2015 and won championships in 2014 and 2015.
