AURORA, IL – Waubonsie Valley students and staff gathered Tuesday morning to honor America and the veterans who served their country. Students packed into the school’s Wood Gymnasium where they heard from keynote speaker, retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. David Szablewski.

The school had some attachments to the vets, including recent graduates Tyler Klimcak and Breigs Pflibson, and grandfather of current Waubonsie student, Haley Kueltzo, Lou Kueltzo. Kueltzo joined the Navy in 1952, where he spent his career rescuing downed pilots from the frigid waters of the Pacific. He was a Petty Officer, 3rd Class, and Machinist Mate and served in the Korean War.

Waubonsie also recognized current senior class students, who would be enlisting in the services by year’s end.

Additionally, students had the opportunity to attend “breakout sessions”, in which they could elect to attend smaller presentations from veterans, where students could ask questions in a more informal setting.
