Marinelli Leads Waubonsie Past Metea in Season Finale

AURORA – Since junior Ben Schwieger has been out of the lineup this year, a new face has stepped in each game as the hero for Waubonsie Valley boys basketball. It was senior Mason Marinelli’s turn on Wednesday night, as the Warriors defeated Metea Valley, 62-46, in the regular season finale.

Waubonsie held the lead for most of the game, with Marinelli’s career-high 21 points.

The Mustangs made a small surge in the fourth quarter with a full-court press, but Waubonsie held its place, moving the ball and finding the open man on multiple opportunities.

Other players came off the bench to score in double figures, including sophomore Tyler Helbing.

Waubonsie finishes the regular season at 27-4, equaling last year’s win total and tying the 1988-89 team for second for most wins in a season. The Warriors open the IHSA Tournament on Tuesday, March 3 against West Aurora for a 6:00 p.m. tip off at West Aurora High School.
