BLOOMINGTON – The 2023-2024 Waubonsie Valley girls basketball team definitely has a flair for the dramatic. The Warriors defeated Alton, 55-53 in overtime, to advance to the IHSA State Finals. It was their second straight overtime victory in the playoffs.

The Warriors were down three with seven seconds left in regulation when sophomore Danyella Mporokoso hit a three pointer from the top of the key to tie the game. Senior Hannah Laub’s three-pointer with 2:10 left in overtime helped the Warriors to victory.

Mporokoso finished with 21 points, sophomore Maya Cobb came off the bench with 15 points and Laub added 13 points and 6 rebounds. The Warriors finished 11-of-15 from the free throw line and shot 30% from the three-point line.

The Warriors are now 32-3 on the season and will return to Bloomington-Normal, but this time at Illinois State University’s CEFCU Arena for a rematch with Nazareth Academy. The Roadrunners defeated the Warriors back in early February, 59-35.
