DEKALB – Waubonsie Valley’s offense did not have many chances left to complete a comeback against DeKalb on Friday night, but the Warriors took advantage with a touchdown pass in the final few minutes of its 17-10 win over the Barbs.
Sophomore quarterback Luke Elsea lofted a long pass down the sideline to senior Tyler Helbing for a 65-yard touchdown with 4:34 left in the game. Afterwards, the Waubonsie defense held the Barbs near midfield, and the offense was able to milk the final seconds off the clock for Waubonsie’s first conference win of the season.
The teams traded field goals in the first half, then DeKalb opened the second half with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to take the lead. Jacob Razo punched in a touchdown to close out the third quarter, but the Warriors missed the ensuing extra point to make it 10-9. The two teams went back and forth before the Warriors took the lead for good late in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the DuPage Valley Conference. They host Neuqua Valley on Friday night at Dick Kerner Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The War of 204 can be seen on WVTV and YouTube.
