OSWEGO – Waubonsie Valley girls basketball defeated Downers Grove North, 44-37, in the IHSA Sectional semifinal game on Tuesday night to advance to the tournament’s Sweet 16.
The Warriors came out strong in the first quarter, leading 14-6, but the Trojans outscored Waubonsie 11-2 in the second quarter to take a 17-16 halftime lead.
Both teams were neck-and-neck in the third, before Mporokoso took over in the fourth, scoring 12 of her game-high 20 points in the second half.
Senior Hannah Laub scored 13 points, and junior Lily Newton added 6 points.
The Warriors are now 30-3 on the season. They became the second team in the program’s history to reach the 30-win plateau, equaling the 1998-1999 team that went 30-3.
The Warriors advance to the IHSA Sectional Championship against Benet Academy on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. at Oswego High School. The Redwings defeated Waubonsie in last year’s sectional final, 58-47.
