Four Wrestlers Qualify for State Sectionals

NAPERVILLE – Waubonsie Valley wrestlers Antonio Torres, Ashton Phillips, Jacob Housour and Andrew Meister all qualified for the next round of the IHSA Tournament at Regionals at Naperville Central High School on Saturday.

Torres won the 160-pound weight class with three straight pins. He defeated Naperville Central’s Gavin Bohan in 1:22, then Wheaton-Warrenville South’s Sedeeq AlObaidi in 1:52, and, finally, Marmion’s Kenny Siwicki in 1:27 to win the championship. Torres remains perfect this season at 29-0.

Phillips finished second in the 195-pound weight class. He won his first match with a pin in 3:02, then the semifinal by a 9-6 decision before falling to Marmion’s Teddy Perry in a 2-1 decision. Phillips is now 25-9 on the season.

Housour finished second in the 220-pound weight class. He won the first round by a 5-4 decision, pinned Naperville Central’s Nick Antonietti in 4:27 in the semifinals, before falling to Marmion’s Sean Scheck. Housour improved to 12-5 on the year.

Meister won his first round match by pinning West Aurora’s Mario Ayala in 2:31. He lost in the semifinal, then won two straight to finish in third. Meister upped his record to 34-14 on the season.

Elias Gonzalez and Luke Buntin also advanced as alternates. Waubonsie Valley finished tied for fourth with 97 points. IHSA Sectionals are Saturday, February 12 at Hinsdale Central High School.
