Late Goal Lifts Hockey Past Lyons

AURORA – It was a battle of Top 20 hockey programs as the Warriors defeated Lyons Township, 5-3, on Monday night at All Seasons Ice Rink.

The Warriors took the lead first on junior Elijah Houlihan’s fourth goal of the season with 6:56 left in the first period. The assist came from senior Evan Ziegler and senior Jacob Morgan.

Lyons countered with two straight goals to take the lead to end the second period.

In the third period, senior Luke Peters scored his first goal of the season with an assist from senior Michael McClain to tie it up at 2-2 with 15:16 left. Two minutes later, Lyons took the lead once again, 3-2.

With 8:42 left in the game, Ziegler found senior Matthew Shield for his ninth goal of the season to tie it up once again at 3-3. With under four minutes left in the game and the Warriors on the power play, Ziegler earned his third assist of the night with a pass to sophomore Joseph Pijanowski, scoring his 12th goal of the year. Ziegler added an empty netter.

Senior Andrew Fichtel picked up the win for the Warriors, stopping 36 shots on goal.
