BATAVIA – The two Waubonsie Valley seniors are hoping to finish off their high school careers with trips to the IHSA State Finals, but the first thing was to escape the regionals. Nick Sondag and Mason Kroening took care of business by each winning their respective brackets.
In the 195-pound weight class, Kroening defeated second-seeded Andrew Leonard from Wheaton-Warrenville South, 12-4, to win the title. In the first round, Kroening pinned East Aurora’s Gonzalo Magana and defeated Marmion Academy’s Tyler Surges, 13-6.
In the 220-poiund weight class, Sondag defeated Naperville Central’s Christian Nussbaum to win the championship with a fall at the 2:49 mark. Before that, Sondag pinned two opponents both inside two minutes. Sondag improved to 37-1 overall on the year.
In other action, Chris Gonzalez finished fourth in the 126-pound weight class, and Lucas Bratland took fourth in the 145-pound weight class.
IHSA Sectionals take place on February 10 and 11 at Downers Grove North.
