AURORA – The Waubonsie Valley chess team took to online chess like a fish to water and won the Steelman Invitational on Saturday.
Despite losing to DuPage Valley Conference rival Neuqua Valley in the second round, the Warriors edged the Wildcats via tiebreaker points.
Amogh Parmeswaran, Rahul Parvathala, Owen Jakl and Matthew Pikus all earned at least three points for the day, which lasted about 11 hours of play.
In the open competition, Avi Desai (5th place) , Lalith Vattyam (7th place) and Eric Chtilianov (10th place) each won three of four matches.
The competition involved the use of an online chess software called LiChess, which students had to use due to Covid restrictions on in-person competition.
