BLOOMINGTON – This year, the Waubonsie Valley varsity cheer team is making history, after placing fifth in the IHSA Sectionals and advancing to the state finals.
“The last time cheer went to state was 2008,” said senior co-captain Mason Huffman, “so to compete on the mat, I’m really happy for our team, and just to redeem ourselves means a lot to us.”
There are many things that make this team different than teams of previous years.
“This year, we’ve been much more structured,” said senior co-captain Hannah McDaniel. “Throughout the summer, we’ve done a lot more conditioning and a lot more preparing for this moment.”
The team performs in the IHSA preliminaries on Friday at 4:20 p.m. at Illinois State University in Bloomington and hopes to advance to the finals on Saturday.
