PALATINE – The Waubonsie Valley tennis team is in third place after the first day of competition on Thursday at the IHSA State Finals.
Junior Hector Diaz won his first round matchup, 6-0, 6-0 over Rockford Guilford before falling to Streamwood, 6-1, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, Diaz two straight, beating Champaign Central and Stevenson. On Friday, Diaz will face Edwardsville’s Jesse Hattrup in the fouth round of the consolation bracket.
Senior Samayan Tayal won his first round matchup, 7-5, 6-3 over Deerfield before losing to Lyons, 6-1, 6-0. He then won two straight over Glenbard North and Homewood Flossmoor. Tayal will face Stevenson’s Jaden Dai in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, junior Revanth Kothapalli and sophomore Ishan Suresh Kumar went 1-2 on the day. The freshmen team of Kavin Sivapunniyam and Krish Dave also went 1-2.
The Warriors have 13 team points and are tied for third with Barrington and Glenbrook South. The IHSA State Finals continue Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit ihsa.org.
