AURORA – The Waubonsie Valley girls tennis team made history this weekend, winning its first-ever team sectional title.

Senior Sofia Parranto and freshman Devi Rao led the way, winning the doubles tournament. They swept teams from Metea Valley, Plainfield East and Neuqua Valley before defeating Metea Valley’s Sarina Saleem and Sophia Cahue, 6-3, 6-3 in the championship.
Freshman Lydia Parranto finished second in the singles tournament. Parranto swept players from …., before falling to Plainfield North’s Jessica Kovalcik, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship. Sophomore Chloe Cochran also won two straight singles matches before losing in the third round to West Aurora’s Elena Grmusa, 6-1, 6-0.
The Warriors edged out Plainfiled North for the team title, 22-20. It was the first sectional title in the program’s history. Waubonsie finished second at sectionals in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
IHSA State Finals are October 18-19 at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.
