AURORA – Waubonsie Valley used its last at-bat to beat Hinsdale Central, 5-4, in the IHSA Regional Championship on Saturday. Owen Roberts walked it off with an RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th.
The Warriors lead 4-1 after two innings before the Devils responded with three unanswered runs to tie it. In the seventh, Connor Beren lead off getting hit by a pitch. Ryan Lucas followed with a single, and Ryan Gustaitis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Roberts then singled in Beren to win the game.
Gusaitis went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Roberts, Ben Ford and Lucas went 2-for-3. Ryan Morton went 1-for-3. Morton also pitched four scoreless innings, allowing six hits. Roberts came in to pitch the final three innings, striking out three.
It is the Warriors’ sixth regional title in the program’s history. Waubonsie Valley will take on Plainfield North for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch in the sectional semifinal on Wednesday at Plainfield North High School.
