AURORA – Like everything else this year, the IHSA State Chess Championships were different than any other competition in the past. This weekend, the Waubonsie Valley chess team competed virtually in the school’s library media center, and the Warriors took advantage of being at home, finishing in sixth place.
Waubonsie Valley won six of their seven matches, winning their first three matches on Friday. The Warriors defeated Lincoln-Way West, Antioch and Argo. On their first match on Saturday, Waubonsie fell to Chicago’s Payton High School, but then they came back to win three straight to finish the tournament, beating Lincoln-Way East, Glenbrook North, and New Trier.
Team members included Amogh Parmeswaran, Rahul Parvathala, Matthew Pikus, Daniel Treuhaft, Owen Jakl, Usman Kaleel, Shivank Mishra, Avi Desai, and Griffin Snyder.
The Warriors were one of four DuPage Valley Conference schools to finish in the top 10. Naperville North placed fourth, Neuqua Valley finished seventh, and Naperville Central ended in eighth.
