DEKALB – Waubonsie Valley is preparing for its commencement ceremony on May 25. Assistant principal Montrine Johnson has worked hard with staff to make sure the ceremony is a special event.
“I think it’s a really important ceremony for the family,” said Johnson. “I know that it’s also the last time that many of our seniors have an opportunity to come together as a class. It’s a celebration of their accomplishments over the last 13 years of school, and it really is the closing or the ending of one chapter and the beginning of another.”
The preparation involves an entire team of people that takes almost a year to put together, “This has been the preparation the beginning of the year from everything to the seat assignments, to the reading of the names,” said Johnson. “Just making sure that all of our students can meet those requirements, teachers, counselors. It’s just a lot of people here at Waubonsie really work hard to make sure that it’s a special occasion for the families and for our graduates.”
Johnson encourages the students to embrace the moment and appreciate those that helped them get to that point. “On that day, I just encourage seniors to say thank you,” said Johnson. “Say thank you to your families, thank you to our staff who are there to support you. We truly do enjoy celebrating that moment with our grads.”
Students are reminded to dress properly for the occasion. They are also reminded to not decorate their graduation caps, but they are allowed to wear service cords with their gown. Graduation is Sunday, May 25 at the NIU Convocation Center. For more information, visit waubonsiestudent.org.
