AURORA – The team talked about starting the season 0-2. Not only would the winless start be ugly, but it would create a difficult hole to dig out of. Friday night, the Warriors made certain they wouldn’t have to worry about that, as they defeated Glenbard North, 21-7.

Waubonsie opened the scoring on the very first drive. Senior quarterback Tanner Westwood capped off the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. The Warriors tacked onto their lead with a big run from senior tailback Nate Ashford to set up sophomore Bryce Logan for a 31-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, Harper Cole caught is second touchdown pass in has many games, a 28-yard pass from Westwood, to give the Warriors a 21-0 lead at the half.

The second half looked like a different game for both teams, a half that included miscues and turnovers. Glenbard North (0-2) finally scored in the third quarter, but just could not recover fully from their deficit. Defensively, Waubonsie Valley (1-1) got two interceptions from Harvard-commit Derric Lee and an interception from Nick Lamoso.

“Very proud, very proud,” said Lee. “The lineman, great job putting pressure on the quarterback to throw up to the DBs to get picks. LInebackers, great job tackling…great job altogether.”

“We just came out way more focused,” said Northern Illinois University commit Charles Robinson. “We had to come out strong against Glenbard. We couldn’t go out of here and be 0-2.”

“We played a great first half,” said head coach Paul Murphy. “Our defense was solid all night. They were kicking our offense’s tail in the second half, but our defense bailed us out. Now we got to put two halfs together.”

Waubonsie travels to Naperville on Friday for its annual tussle with Neuqua Valley for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Barrows Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WCIU (Channel 1010 on AT&T Uverse / Channel 183 on XFinity Comcast / Channel 207 on Wide Open West / Channel  26 on DirectTV & Dish Network).
