AURORA, IL – The Warriors found themselves in the first round of the IHSA playoffs, but had to face a stiff rival in Metea Valley, who they had beaten earlier in the season, 38-37. Once again, the game was just as close, as Waubonsie scored late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Mustangs, 21-14.
Tony Durns was used sparingly due to a sore ankle that he suffered from the previous week. However, the Warriors managed to put together a rushing game of Zack Bennema, Berg, Rodney Gee, and defensive player, Max Ihry, who sparked the offense with a 73-yard run in the second quarter. Ihry’s long run led to the first of two Bennema touchdowns. The Mustangs took the early 7-0 lead before Waubonsie bounced back to lead 14-7. Metea came back with a touchdown of their own before Waubonsie rallied back with a drive, capped off by an 7-yard touchdown run. Ihry had rushed for over 100 yards on the day.
Waubonsie advances to the second round on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host defending champion Naperville Central at Dick Kerner Stadium.
