AURORA – The cross country season opened on Saturday, and Waubonsie Valley made the most of their first appearance at the Aurora City Invitational at Marmion Academy. The boys team finished first overall , and the girls team placed second behind Rosary.
Sophomore Ashley Heidenrich took first place, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 19:27.60. Sophomore Katelyn Mullinax followed with a third-place finish in 20:18.60, and junior Julia Holstead rounded out the top ten for the Warriors, finishing seventh in 20:47.10. Seniors Shaelyn Iyer (15th) and senior Jamie Elenbaas (25th) also finished in the top 25.
Meanwhile, senior Wes York led six Warriors, who all placed in the top 15. York finished second in 16:31.70. Juniors Alex Barenbrugge and Jake Saindon finished 7th and 8th, respectively. Juniors John Caron (12th) and Eryk Stewart (13th) also finished back-to-back, and senior Cedric McGuire placed 15th.
Both squads compete next at the St. Charles Leavy Invite on September 2 at Leroy Oaks Forest Preserve.
